Recent events in Russia have caused outrage and concern all around the world.
Putins crack down on the rights of the Russian GLBTI community has been compared to Hitlers crackdown on the Jewish community. I could write about the rise of Orthodox religion, nationalism and Tsarism in Russia but I don’t know enough about the subject to speak with authority. Culturally I’m a novice when it comes to Russia and its history.
This post instead is directed at GLBTI people in Russia who might be reading this blog. I know you are out there and I hope you are safe.
No person deserves to live under threats of violence and humiliation because of who they love, and no matter who you are or where you are in Russia you have not been forgotten, the rest of the world is watching. It would be insipid for me to sit here and write a “keep your chin up” when real lives are in danger.
All I want to say is that you deserve love, you deserve peace, you deserve dignity and you deserve freedom.
Never let anybody tell you otherwise. The best way you can give the bigots and the ignorant the big “fuck you” is to survive. Be safe and take care of yourselves.
The world is moving and while we may not be in your homes standing with you, we are not silent.
To everybody else remember evil triumphs when good people do nothing. If you can’t fight then give hope. The cynical might laugh about what you can really achieve but the only failure is to do nothing at all.
