Lately I’ve been playing around with light at home. I’ve been inspired by the work of a few other photographers. I love surrounding myself with other creative people and checking out their work. One photographer whose work I really like is Ethan James. His portrait work is beautifully lit and the subtle tones and contrasts are something that I have been trying to bring to my own work for a long time.
My time in Sydney with its outdoors lifestyle inspired my love of bright daring colour while my time in Melbourne fostered my attention to the little things. Always when I have tried for more subtle styling in my work there has been resistance. I struggle with what I often see as a loss of detail.
I’m slowly working with more and more subtle lighting and I’m beginning to really find a place where I can bring a multitude of different influences together. As somebody who is self taught it’s important to always be looking at the work of others and think about it’s influence on my own.
Late at night the TV with its constantly changing light has become a fun tool to experiment with. You never know what you are going to get. When we look at the television we see a multitude of colours all brought together to give us a picture. We hardly notice how those colours all blend together to cast emotion and mood across the room.
Now I’m feeling inspired and I think I’ll try a few other appliances around the house. The fridge is a good place to start I think.
Below are some of the images I have had some fun with… for a more intimate look you should check out this previous post.
