I’m glad you spoke, now I can tell your mouth from your asshole.
This Sunday night at 8.30pm ABC TV will be broadcasting Riot the story of the 78’rs and the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. As the Festival gets under way in Sydney this week and the march rapidly approaches it’s important to remember our roots and where the Gay Rights movement in Australia began. The struggle for equality has been long and hard and it is right that we pay tribute to those who came before us and laid the foundation for the equality and rights we enjoy today.
This year is a particularly important year. It’s the 40th anniversary of the Mardi Gras March and we are also celebrating Marriage Equality. But the fight isn’t over, we can’t be complacent as the opponents of equality are already talking about trying to abolish the same sex marriage law. Never forget where we came from or how hard people fought, the day we forget that struggle is the day we lose everything that we’ve fought for.
