Homophobia has always been a problem in Australian sport but there are many sportsmen and sportswomen across all the codes who are standing up more and more not only for Marriage Equality but against homophobia in general. There are still very few out players which shows how much work there still is left to do but great players like David Pocock and Ian Roberts who has been a long time campaigner for equality in sport are increasingly speaking out.
David announced via Twitter that he will voting yes when his survey arrives and he and his partner Emma will not marry until all Australians have the right to marry. The statement came after Wallabies coach Michael Cheika and skipper Michael Hooper met with pollies in Canberra to discuss their support for marriage equality.
Over in the AFL, Western Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli used his speech at this week’s AFL Players Association MVP Awards to advocate for the ‘Yes’ cause; other players, including Ben Brown, Easton Wood and Jordan Roughead also wore badges in support of equality.
