This years Christmas message…

IMG_1284Another year done and Christmas eve is already here. Im not one for the religious side of Christmas but it does represent a nice bookend for the year and a time to reflect on how the past 12 months have been. This will be the first time I am spending Christmas outside of Australia.

I just got off Skype with my family who are all together. Every year we all have dinner together on Christmas eve and it was important to at least be there in spirit. The ten hour time difference makes it a bit tricky, i’ll be waking up at about 2am to Chat with my Grandparents and the extended family later tonight.

My family has never been particularly religious, we never went to Church and I went to a non-denominational school. Christmas for us has always been about family and making sure that even as our lives move us apart we always find time for each other at the end of the year.

Last year I went home for Christmas but didn’t tell my family. They just walked in and I was there. This time I decided to stay in London and spend time with my other family, my friends.

Presents are something that we gave away too. They’ve made a comeback since I acquired a nephew and a niece because we all like to do something special for them at this time of the year, but for the grown-ups being together is more important.

The older I get the less important Things are to me. Time is the only thing that has value, time with my family, time with my friends and time with myself.

I think too many of us focus our lives on making money hoping one day we will be rich enough to buy the time back, that’s stupid.

IMG_1257It’s something that I’ve had to remind myself of a lot lately as work consumes more and more of my life.

The lead-up to the end of this year has been even more intense than usual. I was working this month right up until a couple of days ago and the end of year spirit hasn’t really had time to sink in. I was looking forward to spending some time floating around the Christmas markets and checking out the city and it’s decorations but I just couldn’t get away.

Now that I am finally on a break I am thinking about the best way to spend the time I have off. I bought a new camera that is perfect for travelling and site seeing so I’ll be out doing some of my own photography for a change and I have a few nice invitations that I’ll be taking up.
