After spending the last month living out of my suit case, working and trying to find a place to live I thought I’d put together a quick list of a few things I’ve discovered make moving around a lot easier. Whether you’re travelling or relocating for work like me, there are some things you can do which will take a lot of the stress out of it.
The first thing you need to do is travel light. When you travel light it’s less stressful just picking up all your stuff and heading off. Travel with a backpack not a suitcase. Suitcases are more trouble than they are worth because they are heavy an impractical for constant travel. Anything you really need urgently you can buy in most places.
Sort out your banking before you head off. If you’r just heading out for a weekend or moving to another country having access to the money you will need is essential for quick stressless changes to your accommodation. Last time I was in the UK I didn’t get paid for the first 6 weeks I was here because I was given some bad advice. Always get a second opinion!
Pack practical. Take what you need, warm clothes, summer clothes, underwear, toothbrush etc. If you’re moving around then packing clothing that is dry clean only is a bad idea. Make sure you have all the chargers and cords you will need. If you can charge your phone from your laptop then ditch the wall plug, every bit of weight counts. One sturdy pair of good walking shoes and a good winter jacket are essential too in the cooler climates.
Top up and charge your phone regularly. Or pay your phone bill. When your’e travelling or moving around, running out of data when your desperately searching for an AirBnb or trying to find a station sucks lemons. Also if you have been clever and remembered to charge your phone using a cable to your laptop then you can charge it on the go. One tip to save on my data is taking screen shots of important maps and sites so I don’t have to keep jumping online all the time.
Write everything important down. Yes Millennials… suck it up! At some point your going to run out of phone charge and won’t be able to find a hipster cafe with free wifi and all your precious technology will be useless. Take a note book and write important addresses and postcodes down. Write important phone numbers down, Trust me it works!
