I don’t have a watch. The only clocks up here are on my phone and on my laptop. There is a beautiful brass clock in the cabin but I hardly every see any of them because I am on deck or enjoying the sun and the water most of the time.
Life onboard the Arion is dictated by the sun and the wind, and it’s a wonderful way to live. I don’t have to set an alarm in the morning because the sunrise shining through my porthole each day wakes me up but I have been going to bed early every night anyway and it feels awesome. Life here depends on the sun. The day starts when it comes up and ends an hour after it goes down. I’m in bed by 10pm, there is no Internet, no grindr, no mindless TV and all of the other stuff that fills up my evenings and to be honest I don’t miss it. How could you when the stars here at night are so spectacular? This is only my fourth night onboard the Arion but I have already noticed how simple this life is and how happy it makes me.
I’m sorry if I have been hard to reach lately. Living like this does take some adjustment.
We fill our lives with so many things and then complain that there is no time, but what I have discovered in my short time here is that life can be so beautiful when it’s simple. I have a small bunk and a single locker for my gear no bigger than a small suit case. I need very few things to survive here. There is no TV but why would I want it when I am sitting here on deck watching the Turtles play in the harbor around me. Of course I could never give up my Internet but even here I am forced to turn it off because we are not out of range all the time. I haven’t been sitting constantly on my phone checking Grindr and Tumblr, and staring at my Facebook screen waiting for something to happen. Life is simple.
There is nothing to stop people living this way all around the world. You don’t have to be isolated aboard a boat in the Whitsundays to realize you need to put you phone away or stop staring at your Facebook for hours on end. There is so much to do and see even in your backyard, go do it!
