Now that the year is beginning to draw to a close we begin to look back over the year that was and look forward to what we want to achieve for the next year.
It is easy to take measure of all that we wanted to achieve and did not achieve, and think that we have failed or not taken advantage of the opportunities that were granted us over the past 12 months.
The phrase “life is what happens when you are making other plans” never rings truer than at the end of the year and we reprimand ourselves for all the things we did not do. But is this constructive?
Life is all about change, growth and adventure. If you achieved all your resolutions for this year then way to go. You get a gold star.
If you didn’t, then the chance start a new year with even more enthusiasm is almost upon you.
Resolutions are a funny thing. You see they are not exclusive to the New years period, you can make a choice to change something in your life at any time of your choosing. In fact every moment in your life is a chance to say “I am going to…”. There is infinite power in those 3 dots at the end. Right there at the end of that sentence is infinite possibility. Now I’m not talking about saying, ” I am going to sprout wings and fly around the sun with a feather up my butt”. I am talking about making real choices about who we are, how we will approach our day and what we will do with the moments that are given to us.
If you want to quit smoking, you don’t need a New Years resolution to do that.
If you want to lose weight, you don’t need a New Years resolution to do that.
If you want to hit the gym, you don’t need a New Years resolution to do that.
If you want to learn the guitar, you don’t need a New Years resolution to do that.
If you want to finally finish that book, you don’t need a New Years resolution to do that.
New years resolutions are great because they are 1 thing that helps to give us focus on what we want for the year ahead, but they certainly don’t have the monopoly on life choices.
Make the decision every day to be mindful of the moments, the opportunities and the people around you and you will find that the things you want to achieve are not bound by dates but by your own thinking.
